SEO gets you found on Google. AEO gets you chosen by AI. Here’s what both mean, why they matter for your online business, and exactly what to do about it.

You have probably heard the word SEO thrown around a lot. Maybe you have a vague sense that it means getting found on Google. Maybe you have been meaning to look into it properly for a while but every explanation you find feels like it was written for someone with a computer science degree.

This is not that post.

This post is going to explain what SEO actually is in plain language, introduce you to something newer called AEO that is becoming just as important, and tell you exactly what you can start doing today as a beginner. No jargon, no overwhelm, and less than ten minutes of your time.

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It is the practice of making your website and content easy for Google to find, understand, and show to the right people.

When someone types a question into Google, Google looks through millions of websites and decides which ones are most relevant and trustworthy. SEO is how you make sure your website is one of the ones Google chooses.

The good news is that the basics of SEO are simpler than most people make them sound. Google wants to show people content that actually answers their question. So the most important thing you can do is write genuinely useful, specific content about the topics your ideal reader is searching for.

That’s it, at the most fundamental level. Helpful content, written clearly, on topics people are actually searching for.

SEO is not about gaming Google. It is about being the most useful answer to a question someone is already asking.

What is AEO?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimisation. It is newer than SEO and it matters more every year.

Here is why. More and more people are not just typing queries into Google and clicking links. They are asking AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s own AI Overview a direct question and reading the answer it generates, without clicking through to any website at all.

In fact, more than half of all Google searches now end without the user clicking a single result. The answer appears directly on the page and they never need to go further.

AEO is about making sure that when an AI or search engine generates that answer, your content is what it draws from. Not just ranking in results. Being the source of the answer itself.

Think of SEO as getting into the library. AEO is being the book the librarian recommends first.

What is the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO helps Google rank your page higher in search results. Success is measured by where you appear in the list of links and how many people click through to your site. AEO helps AI tools and search engines extract your content as a direct answer. Success is measured by whether your words are quoted, cited, or summarised when someone asks a relevant question.

The important thing to know is that they are not in competition. They work together. A solid SEO foundation makes AEO easier, because the same things that help Google trust your content also help AI tools trust it. You do not need two separate strategies. You need one good one that covers both.

Why does this matter for your online business?

If you are building an online business and you rely entirely on social media for traffic, you are building on rented land. Algorithms change. Reach drops. You stop posting and the traffic stops with you.

A website with good SEO and AEO is different. It works while you are not working. A blog post published today can still bring new visitors to your website in a year’s time, completely for free, because it keeps showing up in search results and AI-generated answers.

This is what passive traffic actually looks like. Not complicated. Not expensive. Just content that answers real questions, written in a way that search engines and AI tools can understand and trust.

How does SEO actually work? The simple version.

Google uses hundreds of signals to decide which content to show. But for a beginner, these are the ones that matter most.

Keywords

A keyword is the phrase someone types into Google. If you write a blog post about building a personal brand, but nobody is searching for that exact phrase, Google has nobody to show it to. Using the phrases people are actually searching for is how you match your content to the right audience.

You do not need a fancy tool to find keywords. Type your topic into Google and look at the suggestions that appear. Those are real searches real people are making right now. Use those phrases naturally in your writing.

Helpful, specific content

Google has become very good at detecting whether content is genuinely useful or just stuffed with keywords to try and game the algorithm. The answer is simple: write for the person reading, not for the search engine. Answer the question fully. Be specific. Be honest. That is what performs.

Consistency over time

SEO is a long game. A new blog post can take two to three months before Google starts showing it to people at scale. This is why consistent blogging over time is so much more powerful than a one-off post. Each piece of content compounds. Six months from now, the post you write today is still working for you.

How does AEO actually work? The simple version.

AEO is about structure and clarity. AI tools extract answers from content that is easy to read, clearly organised, and directly answers a specific question. Here is what that looks like in practice.

Write in questions and answers

Use questions as your headings, exactly the way people would type them into a search engine or ask an AI. Then answer each question directly underneath, in two or three clear sentences before expanding further. This structure is easy for both humans and AI tools to navigate.

Be direct from the first sentence

AI tools look for content that gets to the point. If the answer to a question is buried three paragraphs down behind a lot of introduction, it is harder to extract. Lead with the answer, then give the context. Not the other way around.

Write like a real person explaining something clearly

AI tools favour content that sounds natural and trustworthy, not content that is keyword-stuffed or written to sound impressive. Plain language, specific examples, and a clear point of view all help. This is the exact opposite of the corporate-sounding content that used to dominate search results.

The easiest AEO habit to start today: before you write any piece of content, ask yourself what is the one question this post answers. Then make sure you answer it clearly in the first paragraph. That single habit will improve both your SEO and your AEO immediately.

How does Google even know your website exists?

Here is the step almost nobody talks about. Google does not automatically know your website is there. You can publish the best blog post of your life and Google might not look at it for weeks. Or ever.

That is what Google Search Console fixes. It is a free tool from Google, and it is the difference between hoping Google finds you and telling it exactly where to look.

Set up Google Search Console and verify your website

Search for Google Search Console and sign in with a Google account. Verification is how you prove the website is yours, and it sounds far more technical than it is. Most website platforms have a built-in option for it, and the rest is mostly copy and paste.

Submit your sitemap

Your sitemap is a map of every page on your website. Most website platforms generate one for you automatically. You just paste its link into Search Console once, and from then on Google knows where all of your pages live.

Request indexing for every new post

This is the step that changes things. Every time you publish, paste the URL into Search Console and press request indexing. You are literally asking Google to come and read your page. Without it, you are waiting for Google to stumble across your content on its own.

Check what has actually been indexed

Search Console shows you which pages Google has picked up, which ones it has ignored, and why. Not indexed means invisible. It does not matter how good your keywords are if Google has never read the page they are attached to.

The five minute habit that gets you found: make requesting indexing part of publishing. Write the post, hit publish, paste the URL into Search Console, request indexing. It takes less than a minute and it is the reason your content shows up in weeks instead of months.

What should a beginner actually do first?

If you are just starting out, here is the simplest possible version of an SEO and AEO strategy that will get you results over time.

Start a blog on your website. I built mine on Airo by GoDaddy which made the setup simple even without technical knowledge. This is the single most important thing you can do. Every post is a new opportunity to be found by the right person.

  • Set up Google Search Console and request indexing for every post. Google cannot show a page it has never read. This is how you make sure it reads yours.
  • Write about the questions your ideal reader is already asking. Not what you want to write about. What they are searching for.
  • Use questions as your headings. This serves both SEO and AEO in one go.
  • Answer each question clearly and directly. Get to the point. Then expand.
  • Be consistent. One quality post a week, published regularly over six months, will outperform ten posts published in one burst and then nothing.
  • Be patient. SEO takes time. Results compound. The work you do now is still working for you next year.

Does SEO replace social media?

No. But it changes your relationship with it.

Social media is great for connection, community, and getting in front of new people quickly. But it requires constant presence. The moment you stop, the traffic stops.

SEO and AEO give you traffic that keeps coming in whether you are posting or not. Used together, social media becomes a tool for amplifying content that is already working, rather than the only thing keeping your business visible.

That is a much more sustainable position to build from.

SEO gets you found. AEO gets you chosen. And both of them work while you sleep.

The bottom line

SEO is about being findable on Google. AEO is about being the answer AI tools reach for. Together, they are how your website becomes an asset that brings people to you, quietly and consistently, without you having to promote yourself every single day.

You do not need to understand every technical detail. You need to write genuinely useful content, structure it clearly, answer real questions, and do it consistently over time.

That is it. Start there. The rest follows.
